| Dear Friends, This week's quote is from spiritual awareness class Discourse 65, which was published in Volume 1 of The Living Light Dialogue.
"Greetings, students.
In bringing to you over these past years our understanding of the purpose of life, we have tried to bring to you these lessons ever in accord with your ability to absorb them. For nature herself is not wasteful and so it is in bringing light to the world. You will notice, I'm sure, that the lessons have been brought in ever expanding or broadening your understanding. They are constantly evolving, as you are constantly becoming more receptive to the Light. And at this time we will speak in a broader way perhaps on creation, duality, and freedom.
It has been stated that fear and faith is one and the same! It has also been stated not to annihilate the functions, but to bring them into balance with the soul faculties! When this power flows through the functions or expresses through them, you experience what is known as fear. When this same power flows through the soul faculties, you experience what is known as faith. It is indeed one and the same. When they are brought into balance, you experience what is known as freedom.
This power flowing through the functions with this experience of fear is caused by this so-called self-preservation. Fear is faith; and in expressing fear or faith we indeed not only create but guarantee whatever we have fear or faith in. The reason that this power, when flowing through the functions, is known as fear is because we have faith in the need of protecting our cherished thought patterns. We have need in the functions to hold fast to that which we are familiar with. That is known as self-preservation. When we make the effort to express the same power through the faculties, we bring ourselves into balance and in so doing are freed from the duality of creation.
Fear serves its purpose in the present state of evolution of the masses on your planet. You have fear that when you place your hand in the fire it will burn. Do you not see, students, that what you truly have is faith that this is what will happen?
Think, students, and think again and again! You have the choice in any given situation to express through the functions or through the faculties. When you find your spirit, your power, your energy, expressing through the functions, which are limitation, and when expressing through the faculties, which are limitless, you may choose at any given moment to bring the thought into balance. That, my good students, is known as freedom.
Fear guarantees a reaction. Again and again and again the experience is repeated. When it is balanced (the thought) through an expression of the counterbalance of the faculty, you will be free from the experience and express indeed the purpose of your being.

It is not often that the weekly quote features an entire class. The reason I note this is that the teachings are quite context sensitive. The meaning intended by the teacher could be misconstrued when it is taken out of context. So when the entire class is presented, that issue doesn't exist. Another aspect of these teachings is that a word may have several, quite different meanings, depending on the context in which it is used. For example, the philosophy teaches that desire is blind and also teaches that desire is the divine expression. Well, one might ask, how can the divine expression be blind? The answer to that question, and others like that, from my present perspective, is part of the process of growing in understanding or, in terms of this philosophy, awakening.
