"What does it mean to unfold? Would the class agree that unfoldment means to open or to free? Because this is what unfoldment means in this philosophy. It means to open. And when you open, you free. It means to free your own soul and your own divinity. You see, this is what spiritual unfoldment truly means. It means to free your spirit from the bondage of the experiences that have been accepted, that are dictating our life at this very moment.
Now, I know that many people, entering a Spiritualist church and organization, seem to think that spiritual unfoldment means to become a medium, to become a healer, to become a minister, or etc. That is not what spiritual unfoldment means in our understanding. It means to free your own divinity by accepting the truth of its freedom in the first place, you see. Now, when man says, "Well, this is the way life is. This is what I have and this is my condition," well, the condition of this moment is not the condition of a moment before, necessarily, or of a moment yet to be. And so we are teaching, for spiritual unfoldment, that a person first must gain some self-control over the patterns of mind that are dictating their life.
Now, you know, these tapes or patterns of mind of acceptance of the past, they're not annihilated. We just don't let them play when we have self-control. And thereby, we free our soul."
This is another example of how the meanings of words used in these teachings are often different from our everyday understanding of them. In addition, a word used in this philosophy may have many different meanings depending upon the context in which it is used. Although this may be a bit confusing at times, it encourages us to think and think more deeply, which is one of the purposes of the Living Light.

Volume 14 is the first in a series of books that has what were regarded at the time they were given as private teachings. It includes a number of spiritual exercises and affirmations that are very beneficial in helping the student to unfold. This book will make a fine addition to anyone's spiritual library.
