Serenity's Weekly Spiritual Quote: Adversity and Attachment

 

 

Dear Friends,

 

This week's quote is from spiritual awareness class A/V Seminar 35, which will be published in Volume 13 of The Living Light Dialogue.
  

". . . you must remember, everyone will agree what they are attached to, they are emotionally controlled by. Is there anyone who will not agree with that? Everyone who’s had a meaningful relationship or marriage or any of those things, you see, will agree, I know, will agree that whatever you are attached to, you are, to the degree of your attachment, controlled by. All right? But then try to understand, an adversity is only an undeveloped attachment. It is growing. It is an attachment. A person says, “Well, I’m adverse to this,” or “I’m intolerant of that.” That’s what it is. You are creating and solidifying a judgment. . .

And in so doing you’re guaranteed to service it someday in your life. So the more adverse you are to anything, the more intolerant you are, the more you are controlled by it, until you serve it as a complete attachment. That is the law of that function of attachment and adversity. So take a good look. I mean, everyone is familiar and knows their attachments. Few, very few people are even aware of their adversities. They push them aside. They don’t even want to think about them. Yet those adversities are growing into very strong attachments, and they will be servicing them in keeping with how great that attachment is. For an adversity is a growing attachment because you direct energy to it. That which you direct energy to and that you have created begins to grow up and grow very strong. Yes. And then a person wonders, “Why did I have this experience? I wasn’t attached to this.” No, you were adverse to it and did not accept the demonstration that an adversity is a growing attachment."

 

 

 

One of the sayings that was published in the first book of Living Light teachings was, "Our adversities become our attachments. It is a subtle law."

Serenity's Weekly Spiritual Quote: Insight into care and joy

 

 

Dear Friends,

 

This week's quote is from spiritual awareness class A/V Seminar 30, which will be published in Volume 13 of The Living Light Dialogue. It is an extended conversation between the teacher and a student. The student's words are italicized.

  

“See, if you don’t care about the temple of God, if you don’t care about your body, then you can’t expect any joy to come out of it. If you don’t care about your thinking, if you don’t care about your attitude, then you can’t expect to get any joy out of it. Because you can only get out of anything what you put in. And if you’re not getting something out of anything that you think you’re putting something into, stop, pause, become alert, aware, and awake, because the truth is you’re not putting anything in because we get out what we put in. So if you’re not getting joy out, you’re not putting care in. You see. It’s like a person, you know, perhaps they have a pet. They have a dog, a cat, or something. They have a little pet, and they say, “Well, this pet has become a burden to me. It’s getting inconvenient. It’s a constant hassle. I got to take care of this. When I want to do something, I got to look after my pet.” All right?

Right.

You no longer experience any joy from your pet because you’re not putting any care into your pet.

Right.
You see, that’s the thing about life. We really do get out of life what we put in. As we put less in, we get less out. Do you understand?

Yes, I do.

You see, it’s like a marriage. If you really put something into a marriage, then you get something out of a marriage. But if you don’t put anything in and you wake up one day and say, “I’m not getting anything out of this contract, this institution I’ve created,” then you’ve got to get a different perspective because you really, you’re not putting anything in. Now you may have put in something during the honeymoon, you understand?

Sure.

But the mind is thinking about those two months, or three, or six or whatever it was.

Right.

It’s not thinking about the daily process of putting something in.

Right.

Do you understand?

Yes, I do.

So often the mind, we permit it to deceive us. We tell our self, “Oh, you know, when I first got married it was such a wonderful experience, etc.” And then years pass by and it’s miserable. There’s no joy in the marriage. There’s no joy in the relationship. There’s no joy of any kind. There’s only a drudgery and it’s a real effort to even go home. Right?

Right.

But the person thinking that way, with that type of an attitude, keeps reminding themselves of how much they’re putting in. But they are deceiving themselves because they are thinking about their effort during the early stages. They’re not thinking about the day-to-day effort that is required.

Right.

Do you understand?

Sure.

It takes day-to-day effort.

Right.

Because you are working not just with yourself, hopefully with yourself, you’re constantly being tempted, you see. Convenience is a trap that a wise man doesn’t tempt himself into. You see, without conscious awareness, you find yourself becoming more and more dependent. [You] don’t even think about the dependence. Well, the person [says], “Where are they? Five minutes past and they’re still not here!” And all of these various patterns of mind, you see, these habits, they start growing very strongly, and they reveal the dependence that is taking place. Yes.

Right.

And so a person becomes, in a situation like that, much more aware of what the other person is not doing than what they are really doing themselves. You see?

Yes.

So they stop and say, “Well, they’re not doing this anymore. They’re not doing that, that, that, that, that, that.” But you have to understand that during the early stages, you see, what is known as the romancing stages, all of the energies and efforts were going in to please the other person. And the other person was putting all their efforts in to please that person, because, you see, they want something out for they have denied what they have.

Right.

They’ve denied it all exists within their own consciousness. Do you understand that?

I do.

Yes. You see, they lose their individuality. They lose their individual—remember, whatever you begin to depend upon, you do so at the sacrifice of your individual freedom.

Serenity's Weekly Spiritual Quote: Insight into gratitude

 

 

Dear Friends,

 

This week's quote is from spiritual awareness class CC 49, which was published in Volume 3 of The Living Light Dialogue. It begins with a question from a student, which is italicized to distinguish it from the response of the teacher.

  

“Would you, within the context of this understanding, explain the difference between generosity and givingness? I also recall that at one time, I think, you said that givingness is the principle through which the Divine flows. Also, consideration was mentioned as the principle. Could you clarify the difference between this and gratitude as opening the door to supply?

Thank you. And the lady has asked several questions, including generosity, givingness, gratitude, compassion, and the door to supply. When a person is truly grateful, they emanate a rate of vibration. And that rate of vibration goes out into the atmosphere and brings its kind back. Now, for example, we understand that God, the Divine, is not a master, but is the greatest servant of all. And a servant, in our understanding, is one who serves. And gratitude is an expression for a service rendered. So when a person is truly grateful, they are expressing their recognition and their acceptance for the service that they have received. Therefore, they guarantee a continuity of that service.

Now, what happens when a man is ungrateful? Now one of the easiest ways to recognize ingratitude is complaining. If you have a person that is constantly griping and complaining— that this isn’t being done and that isn’t being done and why is this being done and why isn’t that being done and I can’t accept that without a full explanation first. That level of consciousness, whenever we express it—because the level exists in all of us—that level of consciousness is a level of ingratitude. Therefore, you will notice with people who complain and cry the most, they’re the ones that seem to have the most difficulty with God’s divine, abundant supply, you see. All right. So that is our understanding of gratitude. Now, gratitude isn’t something where you say, “Well, now, thank you, God. I’m very grateful,” then you complain about something, because, you see, that’s contradiction. And a house divided cannot stand. That’s our own house: it cannot stand. So doors open through an expression of gratitude.

Now, what does that have to do with givingness and generosity? A man may be generous for many, many varied motivations, but a man in givingness is in God. And that is the basic difference. I do hope that’s helped with your question."

“There are many experiences in life, and ofttimes we call those “hurt feelings.” But if we’re honest with ourselves, we can say to ourselves, “Interesting that I should merit this experience at this moment.” My good students, if you want to help yourselves, ask yourselves one question whenever you have an experience that has any import to you: “Why this and why now?” If you will do that with all of life’s experiences, you will start on the inward journey, through your own mind, to find what laws you have set into motion. And, having found those laws that you’ve set into motion, you are then in a position to change them."
